A high-resolution study of Holocene paleoclimatic and paleoceanographic changes in the Nordic Seas ArchiMer
Risebrobakken, B; Jansen, E; Andersson, C; Mjelde, E; Hevroy, K.
High-resolution records from IMAGES core MD95-2011 in the eastern Norwegian Sea provide evidence for relatively large- and small-scale high-latitude climate variability throughout the Holocene. During the early and mid-Holocene a situation possibly driven by consistent stronger westerlies increased the eastward influence of Arctic intermediate and near-surface waters. For the late Holocene a relaxation of the atmospheric forcing resulted in increased influence of Atlantic water. The main changes in Holocene climate show no obvious connection to changing solar irradiance, and spectral analysis reveals no consistent signature for any periodic behavior of Holocene climate at millennial or centennial timescales. There are, however, indications of consistent...

A holistic framework for the analysis of landscape changes following organic farming Organic Eprints
Levin, Gregor.
In this paper I reflect on the design of an appropriate methodological framework for my Ph.D.-project. Holism is widely recognised a vital concept for research on human-environment relationships. This is especially the case when agriculture’s impact on land-scapes is studied. Thus, for my study on landscape changes following conversion to or-ganic farming, I discuss holism in terms of its relevance in principal and in terms of its actual practicability. I recognise that a holistic angle is decisive in order to analyse and understand the spatial and temporal dynamics of the landscape and the multitude forces and processes that have a bearing on them. Keeping a general holistic concept in mind can elucidate factors and processes that might be overlooked in a...

A homolog of the RPS2 disease resistance gene is constitutively expressed in Brassica oleracea Genet. Mol. Biol.
Malvas,Celia C.; Melotto,Maeli; Truffi,Daniela; Camargo,Luis E.A..
In this study, we identified disease resistance gene homologs in Brassica oleracea and assessed their expression in lines resistant and susceptible to Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris (Xcc). Two DNA fragments of approximately 2.5 kb (BI-16/RPS2 and Lc201/RPS2) were amplified by PCR from two Brassica lines using primers based on an RPS2 homologous sequence previously described in the Brassica oleracea ecotype B117. The sequences of these fragments shared high similarity (95-98%) with RPS2 homologs from various Brassica species. The digestion of these fragments with restriction enzymes revealed polymorphisms at the Xba I restriction sites. The length polymorphisms were used as a co-dominant marker in an F2 population developed to segregate for...

A Household Level Analysis of Food Expenditure Patterns in Urban China: 1995-2000 AgEcon
Aguero, Jorge M.; Gould, Brian W..
With China's admission into the WTO, there is the potential for dramatic increases in U.S. agricultural exports to China. As China's economy continues to develop, there is general consensus that there will be an associated change in the population's diet. Currently, dairy products account for a small proportion of total food consumed, but that has been increasing in importance over the last two decades. As Chinese markets become more open to U.S. food products, it is important that U.S. manufacturers and traders obtain a better understanding of the determinants of food expenditures in China. This paper addresses the question of how changes in household income may impact food demand in general and dairy products in particular.

A importância estratégica do potássio para o Brasil. Infoteca-e
KINPARA, D. I..
ABSTRACT: This paper presents the strategic importance of potassium (K) in Brazil, focusing four aspects: the function in the plant; the K content of Brazilian soil; the different K forms; and its demand in the Brazilian agricultural system. The K is not a structural element of plants, but it participates in many biochemical plant processes, like carbohydrates and proteins synthesis, showing its economical importance in terms of production. A major problem in Brazilian soils is the leaching process due to the rain regimes. Since k is a very soluble ion in the soil profile, it must be replaced in regular basics to the culture. There are five sources of K, all them of high solubility. Less soluble K compounds have been studied as a way to minimize the...

A indústria do turismo: história, características e tendências AgEcon
Mendonca, Maria Cristina Angelico de; Batalha, Mario Otavio; Santos, Antonio Carlos dos.
This present paper aims to present a historical evolution of the tourism industry, focusing on the reflexes of the industrial management paradigms as well as those of some technological innovations on it, show its features emphasizing its differences in relation to other industry forms and reflect on its trends in Brazil, considering the participation of the rural segment. Through the historical evolution, one verifies that the movements of other forms of industry, as far as growth is concerned, technological innovations and changes in management patterns have reflected directly on tourism industry. There is a trend in formation of networks, as a managerial alternative to small and medium size companies, and it happens to adapt to the tourism industry’s...

A indústria rural no Brasil Rev. Econ. Sociol. Rural
Fernandes Filho,J. F; Campos,F. R.

A leucine-supplemented diet improved protein content of skeletal muscle in young tumor-bearing rats BJMBR
Gomes-Marcondes,M.C.C.; Ventrucci,G.; Toledo,M.T.; Cury,L.; Cooper,J.C..
Cancer cachexia induces host protein wastage but the mechanisms are poorly understood. Branched-chain amino acids play a regulatory role in the modulation of both protein synthesis and degradation in host tissues. Leucine, an important amino acid in skeletal muscle, is higher oxidized in tumor-bearing animals. A leucine-supplemented diet was used to analyze the effects of Walker 256 tumor growth on body composition in young weanling Wistar rats divided into two main dietary groups: normal diet (N, 18% protein) and leucine-rich diet (L, 15% protein plus 3% leucine), which were further subdivided into control (N or L) or tumor-bearing (W or LW) subgroups. After 12 days, the animals were sacrificed and their carcass analyzed. The tumor-bearing groups showed a...

A Linearized Almost Ideal Demand System (LA/AIDS) Estimation of the Demand for Meat in South Africa AgEcon
Taljaard, Pieter R.; Alemu, Zerihun Gudeta; van Schalkwyk, Herman D..
A linear approximated Almost Ideal Demand System (LA/AIDS), estimated in first differences, were used to estimate the demand relations for meat (beef, chicken, pork and mutton) in South Africa from 1970 –2000. Two tests for weak separability, including an F and Likelihood ratio version, failed to reject the null hypothesis of weak seperability, confirming that the four meat products are separable, and should be modelled together. According to the Hausman exogeneity test, the expenditure term in the South African meat demand model is exogenous. As a result, a Restricted Seemingly Unrelated Regression (RSUR) was used to estimate the model, whereafter the estimated parameters were used to estimate compensated, uncompensated and expenditure elasticities.

A META-ANALYSIS OF HYPOTHETICAL BIAS IN STATED PREFERENCE VALUATION AgEcon
Murphy, James J.; Allen, P. Geoffrey; Stevens, Thomas H.; Weatherhead, Darryl.
Individuals are widely believed to overstate their economic valuation of a good by a factor of two or three. This paper reports the results of a meta-analysis of hypothetical bias in 28 stated preference valuation studies that report monetary willingness-to-pay and that used the same mechanism for eliciting both hypothetical and actual values. The papers generated 83 observations with a median value of the ratio of hypothetical to actual value of 1.35, and the distribution has severe positive skewness. Since a comprehensive theory of hypothetical bias has not been developed, we use a set of explanatory variables based on issues that have been investigated in previous research. We find that a choice-based elicitation mechanism is important in reducing...

A method for high accuracy geo-referencing of data from field operations Organic Eprints
Nørremark, Michael; Griepentrog, Hans W..
In this project a Real Time Kinematic Global Position System (RTKGPS) was used to provide high accuracy field operation data. The deviations and errors of the RTKGPS when used in static and dynamic modes were studied as well as the accuracy of RTK GPS in eastern Denmark (55 40 N, 12 18 E) during a 24-hour test. The project introduced a novel real time data acquisition system and post-processing algorithms for improving positioning by merging RTKGPS data with vehicle altitude.

A method for multiple sequential analyses of macrophage functions using a small single cell sample BJMBR
Nascimento,F.R.F.; Rodríguez,D.; Gomes,E.; Fernvik,E.C.; Russo,M..
Microbial pathogens such as bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) induce the activation of macrophages. Activated macrophages can be characterized by the increased production of reactive oxygen and nitrogen metabolites, generated via NADPH oxidase and inducible nitric oxide synthase, respectively, and by the increased expression of major histocompatibility complex class II molecules (MHC II). Multiple microassays have been developed to measure these parameters. Usually each assay requires 2-5 x 10(5) cells per well. In some experimental conditions the number of cells is the limiting factor for the phenotypic characterization of macrophages. Here we describe a method whereby this limitation can be circumvented. Using a single 96-well microassay and a very small...
